DOMAIN
BERKLIX.ORG/gea/
GEA-MUC.DE
First/ Second First & Original Mail List & Web Second
Registered Owner Julian S. Harald C.
Operator Web by Julian S. Mail relay by Julian's robot Web by Harald C. & Mail Censoring by Hilary (alias Sunny) J. (Wife of Harald C.)
Why 2 ? Original & First mail list & then web - Very rarely does the monthly programme refer to berklix.org. which sprang back to vigorous activity years ago, after attempts to forcibly snatch mail list & web site, even while the list was being voluntarily dismantled in favour of a successor run by a rump of committee members - who almost immediately censored their pirated list. Some committee members only know of gea-muc.de etc, a few won't readily volunteer that berklix.org exists, new members & even some new committee members each year are left in sometimes deliberate ignorance by those who hope to kill off the uncensored berklix.org
Web Addresses http://berklix.org/gea/ 3 replicated servers at 2 physical sites - resilient ! http://gea-muc.de
Web Content Beer gardens, Skiing, Wind surfing Cycling (to beer gardens of course!) etc. Downhill Skiing, Ski Tour etc. Langlaufers welcome too. Glitz & forum. Spurious itemised non GEA world news (eg @ Nov 2004: Arafat's brain haemorage, & Netanyahu's threat to resign (better go to a news site instead, eg: BBC (or CNN)
Web Control Editor: Julian S. Not committee controled. GEA information welcome from all, no committee approval needed. Info welcome equally from event organisers, committee and normal members. Editor Harald C.. Some committee members contribute to it. Which doesn't prove committee controlled, just committee contributed.
Web Format Simple text. Aims to work on every browser, even if all optional features (java cookies frames graphics etc) are turned off, & regardless how old the program, & to work on all operating systems etc, & be accessible to blind people with appropriate text interface device. Glitzed too much, Slick - when it works. More graphical than berklix.org. Enable all the features the author plays with (that can raise security, portability, compatibility & upgrade issues etc). Ensure you've got most or all of: latest HTML extensions, cookies, java script, plug ins EG flash, graphics, extensive colour palette, standard screen pixel resolution, & any other new browser features as they come available.
Web History Original & First GEA Web Site. Started as a copy of berklix.org/
Web Author Julian S. joined GEA in 1985; committee member 1990/1991; before & since, an organiser for skiing, beer gardens, barbecues, windsurfing & camping & Austria/ Italy trips & annual elections, beer garden mail list etc. Web added when committee member Graham C. liaised to the committee. Harald C.. Asked Julian S. for various help while learning web technology, prior to splitting off his own web site.
Server Technology Triple redundancy servers. Main + 2 backup servers at different physical sites locally in Munich (so no long distance delay). Running on public domain Apache with FreeBSD Unix. Providers behind the domain change, so location & response time will vary. @ Nov. 2004: Single server. Provider=http://www.variomedia.de
Mail List Subscribe gea-subscribe@berklix.org gea-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Mail List Administrator Owner: Julian S.
Subscription Robot: Web & Mail
Censor: None Ever !
First Hilary (alias Sunny) J., with Lawrence J. (co-hijackers of berklix.org mail list). Inherited by the innocent Paul McV (who Julian S. happily co-operated with). Hilary (alias Sunny) J. back in 2004 as aggressive Censor.
Mail List Type Un-moderated, Instant Relay Only subscribed members can post (protection from spammers) Censored. An individual censor can be moderate or excessive. It's an open question whether at any particular time there are multiple moderators who receive submissions in parallel, so no one moderator can indulge in hostile personal vendetta.
Mail List Content Emphasis mainly on Beer gardens & Skiing & other outdoor activities etc, short notice events mail list (day or 2, or or just hours notice, EG beer garden announcements). Occasionally some non announcement stuff. Occasional spam also, as not moderated. (More anti-spam automatic screening soon-ish). A 2nd list exists for skiers, a 3rd for Ski Organisers. CENSORED Only what certain committee members approve. Occasionally valid info is suppressed. Apparently one censor blocked event detail as organiser's web referenced berklix.org Often many of each year's new committee don't even know there are 2 sites & lists, so they unconsciously perpetuate the Censor's power, feeding information only to the censored site.
Advertising & Personal Data Harvesting ? Non commercial provider. No adverts inserted, No address & personal data harvesting done - (Julian S. is an Internet consultant & programmer etc, owns runs & personally builds all software binaries from free source code for servers - he Knows what is installed. Commercial (usually USA based) provider of `free' services. Usage subject to their address & personal data harvesting policy. - (whoever `they' are, various different companies get used as servers over time.
Mail List History & Numbers Original & First GEA Mail List.
Including many of the the original GEA organisers, still very active. Perhaps somewhat lower numbers than other list, but the other list has numerous unknowns who aren't active. Numerous people are on both lists. I declined to offer POETs en masse here, as berklix.org is exclusively people who individually chose to join - unlike the other list.
Started as a pirated copy of Julian S.'s berklix.org mail list taken by Lawrence J. & Hilary (alias Sunny) J. just after web split. Maybe 2002, the POETs group, looking for a new home, were merged in by Owen, who, typical of many is active in events organised by both mail lists. Yahoo List management later inherited by innocent Paul McV. & the 2 list managers used to co-operate, until Hilary (alias Sunny) J. resumed control as censor.
Mail List Technology Triple redundancy servers. Main + 2 backup servers at different physical sites, locally in Munich. Running on public domain Unix: FreeBSD (Servers are totally immune to Microsoft & other viruses. Forwarded mail is not itself scanned for viruses, (but irrelevant, as anyone running a Microsoft PC without a virus scanner is foolish). USA based Company. Yahoo also uses FreeBSD. Virus scanning policy if any unknown, (but irrelevant as anyone running a Microsoft PC without a virus scanner is foolish).
